About Monumenta Nipponica

Masthead | Volume numbers - Publication years | Editors (1938 - present)

Monumenta Nipponica, an interdisciplinary journal on Japanese culture and society, was founded in 1938, making it one of the oldest English-language academic journals in the field of Asian studies. Published semiannually as an international forum for research on Japan by Sophia University, Tokyo, MN carries both original scholarly contributions on history, literature, art history, religion, and thought, and translations of important Japanese literary and historical sources. Early volumes included articles in German and other European languages, but from volume 19 (1964) English has been the sole language of publication. From Volume 60 (2005), issues are available online through Project MUSE. In addition, the complete run of back issues is available online, with a five-year moving wall, through JSTOR.

All contributions are peer-reviewed. Each issue contains on average four articles, including reports on research trends and source materials of note, and fifteen or more timely and authoritative reviews of recent books on Japan. MN is sent out to individual and institutional subscribers in more than sixty countries.

MN is indexed by Arts and Humanities Citation Index, Bibliography of Asian Studies, Historical Abstracts, Index to the Study of Religions Online, International Bibliography of the Social Sciences, and MLA International Bibliography.

Volume numbers and publication years

Between 1938 and 1972 various factors, including the Pacific War, kept MN from holding to a regular publication schedule. The list below keys volume numbers to the year of publication and also indicates the number of issues in each volume. (Commas indicate separate issues, hyphens combined issues; from 1972 to 2007 were four issues per volume; since 2008 MN has been published semiannually in May and November.)
